NOT NEUTRAL
It is not just a prayer book. It is a modern, heavily curated, English-translated interpretation of Jewish liturgy, complete with extensive commentary that locks in a very specific worldview. Translations and explanations are carefully worded to guide the reader’s understanding. Ambiguities in the original Hebrew are often resolved in favor of a particular Orthodox lens. This is classic interpretation as control.
LOCK-IN
Theological lock-in: it presents a rigid, literalist interpretation of Jewish chosenness, covenant, and relationship to the Land of Israel. The commentary subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) reinforces modern political Zionism as a spiritual fulfillment, blending ancient prayer with contemporary territorial claim so they feel like the same continuous truth.
IMPRINT
Daily recitation of these prayers, especially with ArtScroll’s framing, creates a deep subconscious imprint. It wires identity, loyalty, and eschatological expectation in a very specific direction — one that aligns remarkably well with the modern Israel’s self-understanding. Theological lock-in plus repetitive emotional charge equals durable programming. The edition supplies both the text and the approved interpretation in one package.
SOFTWARE
I wrote it because the pattern is visible once you stop treating the Siddur as sacred object and start treating it as software. Source code that runs every day. The output is a specific worldview. Nothing true hides.
Line the desks
LITURGY
Zion, Jerusalem, ingathering, covenant, chosenness are in the Hebrew of the siddur long before Mesorah Publications. That is not ArtScroll’s invention. It is the old code. Treating the 1984 English edition as the origin of those lines is a date error.
EDITION
ArtScroll (1984, R. Nosson Scherman / Mesorah) is a real editorial machine. Fischer, 2010: the literalist English is an ideology about the Holy Tongue, not a transparent pane. First Things, 2009: the house line is strong rabbinic authority, little religious weight on the State, until a buyer demands the Prayer for the State of Israel and they ship it. Steering is real. The steer is yeshivish/Agudah-adjacent more often than Religious-Zionist.
THE FIGHT INSIDE
Modern Orthodox bilingual siddurim (Koren/Sacks and others) are often the ones that celebrate the State in the open. ArtScroll’s default was the opposite until the check cleared. If the dump says “folded into daily repetition,” line which edition, which prayer, which year. A For-the-State page is an insert. The Amidah’s Jerusalem is not.
RITUAL TECH
Daily recitation is software in the boring sense: repetition plus framing plus emotion. That is true of a missal, a catechism, a national anthem, a feed. Naming it only on one shelf is how a mechanism becomes a census.

- That a people is source code, or that Jews are a compiled binary of the State. File 08 parked the genome. File 01: five tells name a doctrine, not a census.
- That ArtScroll invented Zion, covenant, or chosenness. Those lines are old. The 1984 English is a lens on them.
- That ArtScroll is secretly a Religious-Zionist organ. The documented house line leaned the other way; the Prayer for the State was often a buyer’s insert.
- That treating a siddur as software licenses contempt for the people who pray it. Mechanism is allowed. Hygiene of a people is not.
